Coupang requires at least five search keywords per listing, primarily in Korean. If you don't speak Korean, the obvious move is to run your English keywords through Google Translate. That is also the fastest way to become invisible on Coupang. Here's why — and what to do instead.

Why translation tools fail for e-commerce keywords

Dictionary Korean and shopper Korean are different languages. Korean consumers mix native words, Sino-Korean words, and English loanwords written in Hangul — and which form dominates is category-specific and impossible to guess from outside. "Wireless earbuds" translates literally to 무선 이어폰, and in this case that's also what people search. But "sunscreen" is searched as 선크림 (sun-cream, a Konglish word no dictionary would give you), and supplements are searched by claim structure — Koreans type "저분자 콜라겐" (low-molecular collagen) because absorption marketing shaped the category vocabulary.

Translation gives you a grammatically correct term with zero search volume, while the term with the actual volume sits one loanword away. On a marketplace where keywords drive indexing, that's the difference between page 1 and not existing.

How Korean shoppers actually search

• No spaces, compressed compounds. Korean queries compound aggressively: "men's running shoes" is closer to one fused term than three words.
• Benefit-first modifiers. Categories develop standard qualifiers (수분 "moisture", 대용량 "bulk size", 무자극 "non-irritating") that carry more volume than brand terms.
• Loanword spelling matters. The same English word can be written multiple ways in Hangul; usually one spelling owns 90% of the volume.
• Seasonal and gifting spikes. Korean gifting occasions (설날, 추석, 어버이날) create keyword surges with no Western-calendar equivalent.

A practical workflow

2. Check the battlefield for each keyword. How many listings compete, what's the price band, how deep are top-10 reviews, how much of page 1 is Rocket (Coupang-fulfilled)? A keyword you can't win is not a keyword.
